Brush Strokes and Edges

Discover how to infuse your plein air oil painting with interesting brushstrokes and edges. In this workshop you will learn how to capture the landscape by using brushstrokes to calm and activate areas of the painting thereby drawing the viewer’s eye toward your focal point. Learn how to use edges of shapes in your painting to convey perspective and depth. You will need to be able to walk and carry your art supplies to the painting location.
Adam VanHouten is a professional artist who has years of experience teaching as a visual art instructor, painting workshops, and as an adjunct painting instructor at Northwestern Michigan College. VanHouten received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Art Education from Western Michigan University and a Masters in Education from Michigan State University. Adam is an artist with a commitment to sharing his learning through his teaching and to continue to develop and grow his practice as a working artist. VanHouten’s paintings glow with light and texture displaying the colors and nuance of Northern Michigan.

Plein air Easel
Oil or Acrylic paint (choose what you paint with instructor will use oils) with at least 5 colors (Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, Cad Yellow Med or Hansa Yellow Med, Burnt Sienna, Cad Red Med or Alizarin Crimson. ***you can bring additional colors.
Paper towels
Brush washer with Odorless Mineral Spirits
Oil medium-I use Gamblin solvent free fluid
A variety of sizes Flat and Filbert Bristle brushes
Plein air Panels two 11 x 14 (or 12 x 16)
A sketchbook and pencil or pen
Sunscreen, hat, paper towels or rags, camera or phone, and a lunch
