Experience the unique, almost magical properties of indigo dyeing—the original plant dye used to make blue jeans! In this 2-day workshop, we’ll cover techniques for creating Japanese shibori stitched and clamped resist methods. There will be an overview of the ancient craft of shibori, and an explanation of the history and chemistry of indigo dyeing. Students will have access to the instructor’s sample collection, and everyone will receive a copy of the dye recipe and instructions for preparing a vat at home. On the first day, participants will make original designs and patterns and immerse their fabrics into the indigo dye vat. On the second day, we’ll continue dyeing, and practice basic embroidery techniques to embellish the dyed fabrics. All dyes and chemicals and a small amount of fabric are included. Students will come away with a series of small pieces suitable for quilting, collage, table linens, or even embellishments for clothing.
