In this 4-week hand-building ceramics class you will discover how to create beautiful pottery using techniques like pinch, coil, and slab. Whether you’re new to clay or looking to expand your skills, you’ll explore shaping and forming clay by hand to make unique, functional, or sculptural pieces. In addition to the core hand-building techniques, you’ll learn how to design your own templates, incorporate custom textures, and experiment with various surface treatments and glazing methods. This class is perfect for beginners or those seeking new tricks to add to their pottery toolbox. Over the four weeks, you’ll develop the skills to create your own distinctive pieces, all in a supportive and creative environment. Open Studio and one 25# bag of clay included for all three sessions.

NOTE: Finished pieces are normally ready for pick up within 2-4 weeks.

Instructor

Ana Spencer serves as the GAAC’s Assistant Studio Manager at GAAC’s Thoreson Farm Pottery Studio. Raised on the banks of the Great Lakes State, Ana is a teaching artist, now based in Chicago. She does functional work to make everyday activities feel special or even ceremonial. Ana draws inspiration from her love of Northern Michigan and the friendships she made by exploring its beauty. Her highly decorative work is intended to make you smile and feel joy. She achieves this by incorporating bright colors and highly decorative surfaces. With her fifteen years of teaching experience, Ana believes art education is essential to a person’s development and has made it her passion to share her art and skills with youth and adults.
