Leelanau County artist Carol C Spaulding brings Something To Smile About, a small group of new mixed media paintings, to the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s Lobby Gallery.
Working intuitively, Spaulding combines cut-paper collage with exuberant painting. She creates lively compositions in a bright, uplifting palette, full of expressive lines, inserting an array of delightful marks and icons. “I like to begin with an open mind and a playful attitude,” Spaulding said.

Painting and collage-making are two of my favorite occupations. All of the paintings shown here integrate various paper collage pieces into the painted surface.
The process of creating a painting feels mostly intuitive to me. For starters, I like to begin with an open mind and a playful attitude. Throughout the process, I make my personal aesthetic choices which are based on my sense of design and structure, balance, color preferences and overall dynamics.
Ultimately, I hope for a feeling of vitality in the work. Better yet, something that surprises me.
A successful piece endures extensive viewing and affords me a feeling of satisfaction that I have made something I like and perhaps have expressed something that someone else will also like.
