Linoleum has become a popular (and relatively inexpensive) printmaking medium. The resulting block print or linocut is characterized by its spontaneity, boldness, and artist-imposed carving marks (i.e., chatter). In this workshop participants will learn the basics of designing, carving, and printing linocuts. After learning how to handle the carving tools and printing techniques, participants will be given compositional prompts – e.g., compose with both line and mass; compose with and without borders. At the end of the two-day workshop, participants will have both a heightened appreciation of the linocut and be ready to take more advanced workshops.

Instructor

Laura has been creating and hand-printing linocuts for over 40 years. She is drawn to linoleum as a medium for its unpretentious nature, lack of pre-existing texture, and its ability to inspire spontaneous, bold imagery. Laura is also captivated by black-and-white design and the interplay between positive and negative space.

Over the years, Laura has shared her expertise as an instructor at Michigan State University, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Her prints have been exhibited nationally and are part of public and private collections across the country. Laura has also collaborated with poet Anita Skeen on two publications: The Unauthorized Audubon (MSU Press, 2014) and Even the Least of These (MSU Press, 2024).
