Have you been wanting to create your own needlepoint designs? Not sure where to start? When she began to learn needlepoint, Mercedes threw out the rule book and created her own process. In this class, she will provide an overview of her process of creating original works. From setting up the canvas, composition, various traditional stitches, thread and color selection, and how to think outside the box.

Students will leave class with their own work on an 8×8 piece of mesh canvas, stretcher bars and tacks, take-home stitch handouts, and a list of resources to keep the creativity flowing!

There will be an hour lunch break to enjoy a sack lunch with your fellow stitchers, stretch your legs, or stroll the gallery and grounds.

Instructor

Mercedes has been surrounded by arts and culture most of her life. Her grandmother had taught her needlepoint at a young age, but at that time, it didn’t stick. Events in 2020 fueled her motivation to investigate a more traditional hobby and figure out how to bring it into the present. She discovered that the traditional painted canvases didn’t challenge her, so she decided to create her own original designs and incorporate different stitches with no guide. She recently completed the American Needlepoint Guild’s Master Needle Artist program. Her fiber art creations are modern while paying homage to their history by using traditional techniques.
