In this class, we’ll explore vibrant textile traditions from Peru and Mexico, drawing inspiration from their rich cultural heritage, colors, styles, and techniques. Learning embroidery techniques rooted in these traditions, with a focus on respecting and honoring the cultures they come from. Students are encouraged to incorporate their own sketches and source imagery into a final project, which can be an embroidered towel, dishcloth, or table runner.

The class will also include a presentation of work from these cultures, along with stories from Alyssa’s travels to Peru. She will share samples collected during her journeys, offering students a tangible connection to the artistry and history of these textiles.

Instructor

After studying textiles at the Rhode Island School of Design, Alyssa Brieanne started an embroidery and textile studio. All designs begin with a hand-drawn image or painting that is then translated into embroidery. Each piece is a unique color and material investigation, incorporating textures and embellishments. Her work is whimsical, colorful, and playful. She is inspired by folk art and vintage textiles.
