Writing the Arts: Object + Words = Ekphrasis

Dates: September 10, 17, and 24 (Open Reading October 1)
Time: 10 – 11 am
Registration Deadline: September 7
Location: GAAC

Writing the Arts is a collaborative project of the Glen Arbor Arts Center and Michigan Writers. Using the upcoming GAAC Vessels exhibit as foundation (August 26-October 27), Michigan Writers will lead four, one-hour Saturday morning sessions in the GAAC gallery. Participants will explore the Vessels exhibition through ekphrasis — using artwork from the exhibition as inspiration for generating new writing: poems, stories, flash, monologues and whatever creative genre enlightens your pages.

Michigan Writers is a non-profit organization that fosters the advancement and appreciation of reading and writing by providing education and publication opportunities. Read more about Michigan Writers here.

Writing the Arts sessions are September 10, 17, and 24; 10 – 11 am. They will be guided by a facilitator from Michigan Writers.  Participants will have access to a written model and will become familiar with how to invite arts-based inspiration to crawl in through the eyes and down to the fingertips and onto the page. In responding creatively to the Vessels pieces, writers may experiment with how to listen to their own imagination and may draft works that tap into creative styles and subjects. Most of all, participants will have the pleasure of being in the presence of beautiful works as well as writing for the joy of it.

Participation: Writing the Arts sessions are free, but pre-registration is required.

Open to: Writers of any skill level, from emerging to advanced.

Reading and Publication: Additionally, Writing the Arts participants will have the option of submitting revised pieces to Michigan Writers through the Dunes Review platform, and some may be selected for publication in this literary journal. A reading during the last session, Saturday, October 1, will offer a further opportunity to share your creative words with the public. Join us for this inspiring art form.
