The “Support” Class for Painters: Painting Surfaces

The focus here will not be “what” we are painting, but rather what we are painting on! A variety of “supports” for painting will be discussed and samples will be provided so that students can develop a feel for how different surfaces react under their brushes. Discussion and demonstrations will include the pro and cons of various substrates for painting, how to prep paper and panels, and how to mount finished work on paper to panel. Please bring either oils or acrylics and be ready to make a series of timed, small, alla prima paintings from floral still life. Each student will receive a packet of “supports” to try within the context of the class.
Please note there is a $10 fee for a “sample” package of pre-prepared paper, 8” x 10” painting surfaces, including shellacked paper, gessoed paper, paper for oil painters, and raw canvas, payable to the instructor.
