The Joy of Throwing: A Weekend with Master Potter Jeff Oestreich

Potter Jeff Oestreich

Join Master Potter Jeff Oestreich for a unique weekend of lecture, demonstration, and discussion. The majority of Jeff’s work is intended for daily use. Being a functional potter allows him the opportunity to examine form, glaze, pattern and surface as well as to experience the challenge of designing a pot that feels comfortable to the hand. The workshop will investigate these concerns as well as a variety of topics related to a potter’s life.

The program will begin on Friday evening with a presentation by Jeff that will explore 50 years of pottery from his roots in the famous British Leach pottery through the experiences and objects that have fueled his work to date (a reception will follow). Saturday is devoted to the making of shapes on the wheel that will be later altered by faceting, stretching, darting, or cutting and rejoining (a lunch will be provided). Sunday involves the assembling of these forms, decoration, and discussions on the surface achieved in a salt (soda) firing (a lunch will be provided).

Jeff will constantly stress the importance of paying attention to detail in one’s work. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from a Master potter with a group of the pottery community.

Jeff Oestreich began his pottery training in 1965 at Bemidji State University in Minnesota. He later studied at the University of Minnesota with Warren MacKenzie. After graduation, Jeff apprenticed for two years with Bernard Leach at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall. Upon returning to the US in 1971, Jeff set up his pottery in rural Wisconsin, later relocating to Minnesota. He exhibits and conducts workshops nationally and internationally. He is a recent recipient of a McKnight Foundation grant as well as a Jerome Foundation grant allowing him to exhibit and teach in England, Scotland, Wales, New Zealand and Australia. In 2010 he toured South Africa to teach workshops and jury their national clay exhibition. Jeff recently returned from his third residency at the Leach Pottery.
