Sound Garden: Musicians-In-Residence
The Glen Arbor Arts Center’s first-ever musicians-in-residence, IPR’s Sound Garden Quintet, breaks down barriers to classical music by bringing conversation and a community spirit to music-making. The musicians will be housed at Pine Street Studios, which is our wonderful community partner and adjacent to our building. Formed in residence at Interlochen Public Radio in 2021, this wind quintet redefines chamber music through interactive events that sprout in unexpected places. A concert becomes an event in their ambitious hands, and the audience becomes a community of inspiration, understanding, and hope.
Sound Garden Musician-in-Residency schedule of free performances :
Sunrise and Sunset Sounds: In some communities, bells toll across the rooftops to signal celebrations, give a warning, or mark time. This June, the Sound Garden Quintet will send the sounds of music each morning and evening to celebrate the pristine beauty of summer life in Glen Arbor, Michigan. You will be serenaded by a different live performance each day at 9:00 am and 9:30 pm in the Glen Arbor Arts Center lot. When you meet one of the musicians around town, feel free to make a request!
Open Rehearsals: The Sound Garden Quintet invites the community to peek under the hood of a professional chamber ensemble in the Glen Arbor Arts Center parking lot. Join them as they continue to mine the music for expressive possibilities, learn new repertoire, and attempt to unify their instrumental voices. Please bring a lawn chair, a book, and your favorite beverage and hang out with our artists in residence as they work through the creative musical process before a performance. In the case of weather, the rehearsal will be moved indoors (don’t worry, there is still room for you to watch!). All indoor rehearsals are located at Pine Street Studios (next to the Glen Arbor Arts Center), 5710 N Pine St, Glen Arbor, MI 49636

The Sound Garden’s Musical Playground (for KIDS!): With a busy schedule and squirmy kids, a classical concert may be the last thing on a parent’s priority list. The Sound Garden Quintet would like to book a playdate with Glen Arbor kids and parents on your turf. The SGQ will be interacting and performing WHILE kids play at the Glen Arbor Township Park Playground, and they would like to bring some music into their parents’ lives. So hang on the monkey bars with professional musicians on these Wednesdays in June:

The Sound Garden in concert: The Sound Garden Quintet is excited to get to know our community on our turf, meeting you in stores, cafes, and maybe even at your next cookout. And they would like to invite you into their space for these fun, inspiring, thought-provoking, and interactive concert events. All concerts are free of charge, thanks to the generous support of Interlochen Public Radio and the Glen Arbor Arts Center.

Sound Garden Shenanigans: The Sound Garden Quintet’s mission is to “plant music in unexpected places”. So don’t be surprised if they bring music into your life as you go about your day–shopping, getting groceries, or even grilling dinner. In addition, they hope to meet every person in Glen Arbor and give you a live music experience.
Interlochen Public Radio is proud to present the Quintet this year as part of the Manitou Music Festival.
