Readers’ Theater Performance – My Man Godfrey
The Glen Arbor Arts Center’s (GAAC) Readers’ Theater announces its fall play selection, My Man Godfrey, the classic, Depression era comedy with themes that still resonate today. Cast members include Karen Ford, Teddy House, Robert McWatt, John Rentenbach, Ron Smith, Trish Vanderploeg, Karen VanNort, and Peter VanNort. Celeste Crouch directs the play with Josephine Zara is Assistant Director. Sound and lighting crew include Ron Smith, Ken Schultz and Bob House. Cory Woessner and Rob McWatt are the graphic designers. Admission is free but please reserve in advance to confirm a seat.
The play can best be described as a comedy/drama full of heart with marvelous characters, important secrets and a theme that still rings true today. The film, My Man Godfrey, was released in 1936, starring William Powell and Carole Lombard and won four Oscars. The film was deemed “culturally significant” by the U.S. Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Synopsis: A zany heiress, Irene Bullock, tries to help a homeless man, Godfrey, by offering to hire him as the family butler. Godfrey accepts and is thus thrust into the wacky world of the Bullock family.
