Plein Air Painting: Landscape and Abstraction

Date: Wednesday-Friday; July 12, 13, 14
Time: 9 am-1 pm
Registration Deadline: July 9

Experience Plein-air landscape painting in the beautiful Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This workshop will teach techniques for depicting natural and architectural landscapes with an abstract style. Abstraction is freedom from exact representation. We will learn to compose the shapes and colors we observe rather than to create a precise copy of the landscape. Learning to see abstractly is the key to painting success.

Study subjects include light, color, value, atmosphere, depth, value grouping, terrain, water, trees, sky, architecture, edges, brushstrokes, and mark-making. Each day will begin with a lecture and painting demonstration followed by group painting and individual instruction.

The instructor will teach how to build a painting in clear and relatable terms. He uses enlightening descriptions and examples to make painting concepts tangible. From beginners to advanced-level painters, our instructor’s lessons will challenge you and present new ways of seeing and understanding landscape painting. Only a positive attitude is required.

Joseph Lombardo is an accomplished landscape painter and painting instructor. He received an MFA in painting from Bowling Green State University and studied landscape painting at the Burren College of Art in Ireland. Lombardo is a two-time Best in Show winner at the Ohio Plein Air Competition. He has served as Artist In Residence at Buffalo National River, Hot Springs National Park, and the Glen Arbor Art Association. To ensure the safety of our students and Staff, we have implemented new procedures for our 2022 programs to mitigate the spread of COVID and still allow participants to have a wonderful time creating art.

  • Class sizes will be limited to 12 persons for indoor programs and 16 outdoor programs
  • All students who have symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, such as cough, fever, sore throat, vomiting, or diarrhea, should stay home and not attend class.
  • Students and Staff will wash and sanitize hands frequently throughout the day.
  • Staff will sanitize common areas and touch surfaces regularly.
  • We have optimized our indoor ventilation system to reduce the risk of germs and contaminants spreading through the air.
  • If Leelanau County COVID-related cases are designated high risk, students and visitors must wear a face mask to prevent transmission.

To keep pace with the evolving conditions related to the pandemic, Staff will inform the GAAC’s new policies or procedures before the start of the course.
