Plein Air Paint Out and Wet Painting Sale
The Glen Arbor Arts Center will host its sixth annual Plein Air Paint Out Week-end August 1st and 2nd. Mark your calendar now.
Saturday, August 2 will be the all day Paint Out and evening Wet Painting Sale/Reception.
The Plein Air Paint Out week-end just keeps getting better and better as word spreads throughout the state’s art community bringing a high caliber of artists from Leelanau County and throughout the Midwest to participate. When registration opened this year, the 60 artist spots for the Saturday Plein Air Paint Out filled in less than 30 hours – a new record!
On Saturday, after registering at GAAC in the morning for the official Paint Out, artists disperse to find an idyllic spot and set up their easels for the day. The aim and challenge of a Plein Air Paint Out is to “capture the moment” even as the sun and conditions change as the artist works. All 2-D works must be initiated and finished on this one day — rain or shine.
The artists return to GAAC in the late afternoon to frame their work and a crew of volunteers puts the exhibit together. The exhibit is juried with cash prizes given that night. One highlight of the evening is the People’s Choice award with a large cash prize awarded by popular vote. The “Wet Painting” reception has become one of Glen Arbor’s highlighted events of the summer. Paintings are offered on a first-come basis at the sound of the gong. Artists receive 60% of each sale with 40% to benefit GAAC.
Admission to the “Wet Painting” sale event is $15 per person and includes a glass of wine and appetizers from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Each year the event becomes more popular so plan to be in line before the doors open. The Paint Out is all for a good cause – benefitting both our artists and GAAC. It is also a perfect opportunity to take home an original work of art at a great price.
