Messing Around with Paint: Intro to Gouache Painting

In tandem with the GAAC’s “In Bloom” exhibition, exhibitor Carol C. Spaulding offers this introduction to using gouache, a pigment rich water based paint admired for its vibrant color and its ability to be used both opaquely and transparently. Students will generate new work in an atmosphere where experimentation and a non-judgmental approach to painting will be encouraged. Flowers, pots, fruits, and vegetables will be our focus and inspiration for color and composition. The class will include demonstrations, prompts for painting exercises, and suggestions for ways of “getting started.”
A materials list will be provided but students can be provided class materials for a $10 fee payable to the instructor.
Carol Spaulding earned her BFA from Syracuse University School of Art. She has been exploring various subject matter and mediums including oil, gouache, acrylic, wood, fiber and collage mixed materials throughout her career. Her popular “Messing Around with Paint” classes at her studio in Leelanau County offer creative art making experiences to beginning and seasoned artists alike. She believes that experimentation, working in series, and maintaining an initial non-judgmental attitude is the basis of a productive and enthusiastic art making practice. Carol works and teaches out of her self-named Studio and Gallery in Maple City, MI. www.carolcspaulding.com
