Knitting Petoskey Stones

Date and Time: October 22; 2-5 pm
Registration Deadline: October 19

In this workshop, we will knit a medallion inspired by the state stone of Michigan, the Petoskey stone. The medallion is a flat circle knitted from the center out. When a series of these medallions are crocheted together, you can change the circular shape to 4-, 5-, 6-, or more-sided pieces. We will cover a circular crochet cast-on, how to knit circularly with two circular needles, 2-stitch cable patterns, and crocheting medallions together. With this approach, you can make scarves, afghans, hats, pillows, and more.

Amy Tyler, Interlochen, MI. Amy has degrees in modern dance, kinesiology, and physiology. Her art and science backgrounds give her a keen understanding of learning movement skills, composition, pattern recognition, and systematic exploration. She translates that understanding into practical approaches to spinning and knitting techniques. She teaches spinning and knitting at venues across the country and is well known for her animated and engaging teaching style. Amy has published numerous articles in PLY Magazine and Spin Off. You can find out more about her work on her website, www.stonesockfibers.com.

Students need to bring: 100 yards or so of yarn (preferably wool, one or more colors), two circular knitting needles of the same size (but can be of different lengths) appropriate for the yarn, a crochet hook similar in size to the needles, and a darning needle. The instructor will provide samples for examination, additional yarns, a notebook with handouts including written instructions for two versions of the Petoskey stone medallion, and sundry supplies.

Minimum Enrollment: Glen Arbor Arts Center reserves the right to cancel any class or multi-day, sequential-day workshop that does not meet its minimum student enrollment prior to the first class session. If a class is cancelled by GAAC for lack of enrollment, GAAC will offer a full refund to the student in the manner in which tuition was paid (Cash payments will be refunded by check). Please be aware that GAAC is not responsible for losses incurred due to housing, travel or other arrangements.

Requests for cancellation by the student at least seven (7) days prior to the first day of class will be honored (minus a $20 processing fee). NO REFUNDS will be given for a student cancellation made less than seven (7) days in advance of the day of the class.

COVID-RELATED UPDATES TO 2021 PROGRAMS AS OF August 25, 2021
To ensure the safety of our students and staff, we have implemented new procedures for our 2021 programs, to mitigate the spread of COVID and still allow participants to have a wonderful time creating art.

  • Class sizes will be limited to 12 persons or less for outdoor programs and 8 or less for indoor programs.
  • All students must wear face coverings inside the center when social distancing isn’t possible.
  • Students and staff will wash and sanitize hands frequently throughout the day.
  • Common areas and touched surfaces will be sanitized regularly.

To keep pace with the evolving conditions related to the pandemic, any new policies or procedures for classes will be communicated by September 15, 2021.
