Handmade Cards For All Occasions

Sorry, this class has been cancelled.

November 17: Wow your closest family and friends with handmade cards for any occasion, inspired by nature and Michigan botanicals. Learn from Leelanau artist Maia Hausler how to create your own handmade cards to send to your loved ones. Each card will be a unique work of art worthy of framing. We will focus on simple watercolor and gouache painting techniques and native Michigan plants and animals. (If you have other water-based mediums you would like to explore, you are encouraged to bring them!) Every student will leave the class with finished cards full of Leelanau charm!

[tabby title=”Supply List”] A sketch book, pencils, and erasers
Basic watercolor paper/sketchbook for practicing on, ex. Canson or Strathmore brands
Student or Professional quality watercolor (translucent) and/or gouache (more opaque) paints, either tube or pan paints: I recommend Winsor Newton or Winsor Newton Canton, they have various sets that will get you started. http://www.winsornewton.com/na/shop/water-colour/water-colour-sets
Various watercolor brushes: I recommend Kolinsky sables brushes, but as a beginner you can get any mid-quality (not children’s) watercolor brushes.
A Large, medium, and small round brush (sizes 1, 4, and 8 should work well)
Additional brushes if you like. I also recommend a “spot” brush for fine details.
A white watercolor paint palette
2 cups to hold water
Photos of subjects (plants, animals, etc.) you would like to paint, or plant cuttings/live plants
Paper towel roll
Optional, but recommended: drawing board and painters’ tape (removable) for holding cards while you work
Tracing paper
Waterproof illustration markers in various sizes (such as Micron pens)
Small spray bottle for water
Tube of white gouache paint (if you are not bringing an entire set)

Instructor will provide: cards to paint on and envelopes for mailing, but you may want to bring your own size and colors of blank cards. Make sure they are of a thick cardstock.
