Fall Watercolor Workshop with Andy Evansen
The Art Association welcomes back Minnesota artist Andy Evansen as our special Homestead watercolor instructor for 2014:
“There seems to be a never-ending quest for watercolor painters to ‘loosen up.’ I hear that often from students. Many watercolor painters have a difficult time joining shapes and losing edges to create a bold, impressionistic painting. The problem is, to paint loosely you have to have confidence in your abilities and a willingness to let go of details, two things that are hard to come by. In my workshop, we’ll discuss ways to simplify the scene in order to help you paint more boldly.
Good watercolors have a variety of edges throughout, and lost edges are a result of understanding and joining the big shapes. By concentrating on the large shapes and overall design, and leaving something to the imagination, the viewer is forced to interpret details. This makes them a participant in the painting, enhancing their enjoyment of it. Value studies are a great way to work on this, and we’ll do plenty. I’ll complete at least one demonstration painting each day, covering topics such as drawing, skies, trees, buildings, water, and figures. When pigments start flowing into each other on the paper and Mother Nature takes over, the beauty of watercolors is most evident. Lots of individual attention and a fun, relaxing atmosphere will get you on the path to painting impressionistic watercolors.”
Andy began painting watercolors in the mid 1990s and has studied with such well-known watercolorists as Eric Weigardt, Skip Lawrence, Alvaro Castagnet, and Joseph Zbukvic. His work gained recognition after winning an international watercolor competition through American Artist magazine, and he has since appeared in Watercolor Artist, International Artist and Plein Air magazines as well. He served as President of the Minnesota Watercolor Society from 2004-2006, and has become a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally. He took part in the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America Exhibition in 2011 and has since been elected a signature member. His paintings have won numerous awards including the Bronze Medal of Honor at the 2012 American Watercolor Society Exhibition. You can view his work at www.andyevansen.com.
