Abstract AND Representational Painting on YUPO

Date: July 23
Time: 9 am – 4 pm
Registration Deadline: July 20
Location: GAAC
You will love the forgiveness and workability of YUPO paper. There are no mistakes that cannot be easily fixed. This surface is forgiving and perplexing at the same time. Made of Polypropylene, this surface is non-absorbent and offers exciting textural possibilities. Gravity works in mysterious ways creating unusual textures, and the smooth surface allows the artist to create many stamped, imprinted, and applied textures of their own. Because all the paint sits up on the surface of YUPO, it is also easily manipulated and removed. There are no mistakes that can not be corrected or altered–which leads to brave painting! Mark will cover both compositional and technical applications in the abstract and realist format using your photographic reference. Join us for a fun, fast-paced class!

Yupo paper will be provided. All participants will receive two 20×26 sheets of Yupo, which may be cut for working in a smaller size or used as a stencil material. Yupo does not absorb water, so it makes a lasting stencil paper.
Paints-Transparent watercolor (care of Cheap Joes Art Stuff) and Gouache (opaque watercolor, care of M. Graham Co.) will be provided for all participants. If you have pigments you would like to try, bring them with you. Acrylic will also work; however, once acrylic dries, it is not easily removable.
Water-soluble crayons and pencils. I use Caran D’Ache and Prismacolor Watercolor pencils, and I will make those available for you to try. Wax crayons and wax-based pencils will also work but are harder to remove.
Stamps, Stencils, and Textures- I usually make my own stencils which I cut out of Yupo. Feel free to bring any commercial stencils you may have. Bring anything that might leave an impression or make a stamp in paint. I have many and will share! If you think it might work, bring it!
Tools and Supplies- Masking tape, a roll of paper towels, spritzer bottle (plant mister), a fine craft knife (I use a no. 11 exacto knife), a three or four-inch FOAM roller (check the hardware, I will have extras) , a water container and a large plastic garbage bag to protect either the table or the floor…we could get messy!
Brushes-Bring what you have; I use mostly flat watercolor brushes in the 1 and 1 1/2 inch size. Acrylic brushes also work, as do smaller house painting brushes.
