Last year’s event was so successful that GAAA will organize another Plein Air Paint Out on Saturday, August 7. We’ve ordered another picture perfect day that begins with registration for participating artists at 8:30AM and ends with a “Wet Painting” exhibit and sale for the public from 5:30-7:30PM.
After registering at GAAA and having their canvases or papers stamped with the day’s date, the artists will fan out across the area setting up their easels and working quickly to capture the beauty of the day. The aim and challenge of a Plein Air Paint Out is to “capture the moment” as the sun moves across the sky and the light and air conditions change. All 2-D works must be initiated and finished on that one day.
The artists return to GAAA in the late afternoon to mat and frame their work and a crew of volunteers will work quickly to display the work for the “Wet Painting” reception and sale. The 2009 event featured over 70 works by 39 artists. The exhibit is juried with three cash prize awards that will be announced at 6:30. Getting into the spirit of the event is what makes the reception fun as the works are offered on a first-come basis. Volunteers are at the ready to affix the little red “sold” dots before someone else gets your prize discovery. Artists receive 60% of each sale with 40% to benefit GAAA.
A sampling of local wines by the Leelanau County Vintner’s Association makes this truly a “bounty of the county evening”. A donation of $10 per person is asked at the door for the “Wet Painting” reception. The Plein Air Paint Out is all for good cause – benefitting the artists, GAAA and those who want to take home an original work of art at a great price.
